Tim Hands

Tim is the Master of Magdalen College School, Oxford.

Tim comes from a family of teachers: an ancestor was Schoolmaster on board HMS Victory in Napoleonic times, and his father left the independent sector to become head of one of the country's largest and most innovative comprehensive schools.

Tim was educated in the state sector, studying the violin at the Guildhall before reading English at King's College, London. He went on to research 19th-century literature at Oxford, where he ended as a lecturer at Oriel College, helping to admit and then teaching the first women in Oxford's last all-male college. In 1986 he began teaching at King's School, Canterbury, where he subsequently became a Housemaster, and in 1994 moved to become Second Master at Whitgift School.

From 1997, Tim was Headmaster of The Portsmouth Grammar School, one of the country's leading co-educational schools. He became Master of MCS in January 2008 and was elected as Chair of HMC for the academic year 2013-14.
